Taming of the Shrew

Über uns

Sheltered by trees and overlooking the sea, The Italian Gardens in Meads are the magical setting for one of the most popular events in Eastbourne’s arts and entertainment calendar.  And this year, the 20th anniversary of al fresco Shakespeare, the production promises to be very special indeed.  The Taming of the Shrew is one of The Bard’s best-loved comedies, and Eastbourne Operatic and Dramatic Society will be doing full justice to the play’s rapier-sharp wit and the characters’ laugh-out-loud deceptions and entanglements.  But with its setting fast-forwarded to the 1920s this production is a feast for the eyes as well as the ears, with a set that combines bold art deco architecture, vintage posters and an opening scene that takes the form of a fashion parade, complete with sequined, Chanel-style frocks and hot, Charleston-era jazz.  But under the glitz and the glamour, there are deeper themes at work. Because, with the changes in women’s place in society that characterised the 20s, this war of the sexes is not what it seems.

EODS have gone to great lengths to ensure that this production will be an evening to savour and remember.  All seating is under cover, the hospitality marquee is laden with the society’s legendary home-made cakes and this year extra measures have been taken to ensure full compliance with any Covid-related restrictions that may still be in place.

To celebrate their return, EODS talented singers will be staging concerts on the two Sundays of the Shakespeare run, one featuring works from popular light opera, the other much –loved hits from evergreen musicals.

EODS Open Air Shakespeare runs from Friday, July 23 to Saturday, August 7 at 7.30 pm
